Actress Saniya Khera, known for her work in shows such as Junooniyatt, Tose Naina Milaike, Mann Atisundar, and Prem Leela, has returned to television with Shehzadi Hai Tu Dil Ki, where she plays a powerful negative role. Opening up about her decision to portray Kanika, the actress shares that it was the character’s depth and emotional complexity that instantly drew her in.
“I chose to take up the negative role in Shehzadi Hai Tu Dil Ki because Kanika is incredibly layered and strong,” says Saniya. “She isn’t negative just for the sake of drama. She has her own logic, emotions, and vulnerabilities, which makes her exciting to explore as an actor. What really attracted me was the creative challenge. Negative roles give you the freedom to experiment with expressions, body language, and intensity, and that’s something I truly enjoy. Being part of a mainstream channel also means reaching a wider audience with a well-told story.”
Talking about whether she had any hesitation before taking on a negative shade, Saniya admits she felt nothing but excitement. “I wasn’t sceptical at all. In fact, I was thrilled. Characters with grey or negative shades are often the most challenging and layered. They allow you to explore emotions and motivations that go beyond a typical positive role. For me, the appeal was never the ‘negative’ tag, but the strength and depth of the character. Kanika has her own journey and reasons, which makes her feel real and impactful. As an actor, such roles give you immense creative space to push your limits.”
The actress also highlights how Kanika’s look plays a significant role in defining her personality. “The styling is one of the aspects I’m most excited about. Since she carries a strong negative shade, her look reflects power, confidence, and a slightly mysterious aura. We’ve created a very distinct visual language for her bold colours, sharp silhouettes, and statement jewellery that immediately set her apart. The makeup is more dramatic, especially around the eyes, and even the hairstyles are designed to show elegance and authority. The moment I step into the costume, it helps me slip into Kanika’s mindset completely.”
Currently shooting in Hyderabad, Saniya says the experience has been refreshing and creatively fulfilling. “Working here has been comfortable and energising. What I love most is the positive energy on set. Even on long shooting days, everyone supports each other, which makes a huge difference. The atmosphere is very family-like, yet the work ethic is extremely strong. It’s a great learning experience.”
While she admits to missing Mumbai, Saniya says she is thoroughly enjoying this new phase. “Mumbai will always feel like home. I miss my family, friends, and the familiar pace of the city. But Hyderabad has been wonderful in its own way, and I’m genuinely enjoying every moment of this journey.”
