New Delhi, Aug 21, 2026: Bangladesh lawmakers have elected ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party veteran Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the country’s new president.
The 78-year-old BNP secretary-general won the parliamentary vote to become Bangladesh’s 23rd president, succeeding Mohammed Shahabuddin, who resigned last month.
Alamgir secured 255 votes against 88 for opposition-backed candidate Oli Ahmad in Bangladesh’s first contested presidential election in 35 years.
His election comes after the BNP’s landslide victory in February, following the 2024 uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina’s government. (Source: Prasar Bharati Shabd)
